Based entirely upon authentic Sanskrit references and modern concurring facts, the book guides us through the original Hindu concept of a "third sex" defined as homosexuals, transgenders and the intersexed , how such people were constructively incorporated into ancient Indian society, and how foreign influences eventually eroded away that noble system.
It discusses how this concept can be practically applied in todays modern world, the importance of all-inclusiveness in human society, and the spiritual principle of learning to transcend material designations altogether. It offers a veritable treasure trove of fresh information and ideas that will likely challenge the reader to rediscover and rethink Hinduisms traditional understanding and treatment of gay, lesbian, and other gender-variant people within its culture.
Our own modern-day society has only recently begun to understand sexual orientation, transgender identity, and intersex conditions, and our legal and social systems are just beginning to catch up with and accommodate such people in a fair and realistic way. Indeed, there is much we can learn from ancient Indias knowledge regarding the recognition and accommodation of a 'third sex' within society.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada "Gay and lesbian people have always been a part of society from Vedic times to our postmodern times. They should be accepted for what they are in terms of their sexual orientation and encouraged like everyone else to pursue spiritual life. Tripurari Swami "Initially, I did not really allow myself to go deep in trying to understand the third sex. I figured that this was necessary only for those who are insensitive, arrogant and fundamentalist.
It is quite amazing how most of us can be so prejudiced about so many things and not even know it. I thank you and several others for your compassion and for your tolerance in making efforts to educate your Godfamily, so that we can be more authentic servants of the servant.
Bhakti Tirtha Swami. This book examines the complete Ganesh for the first time. Here is the God in his multiple forms from the different geographical areas in Asia. Particularly important are chapters that deal with his Buddhist and Tantric forms.
The controversial question of his origins is also thoroughly discussed. Ganesa commands universal respect among the indigenous religious schools and sects of the Hindus, Jainas and Buddhists.
He is a god who is unique in many ways--his peculiar physiognomy, his double character, as a vighnakarta creator of obstacles and as a vighnaharta remover of obstacles. He is worshipped first to ensure success of all religious and secular functions and enterprieses. GAnesa is also the god of dance and music. The cult of Ganesa spread to various countries of Asia. The rise of Ganesa to pre-eminence in the orthodox Hindu pantheon, as one of the panca devatas, is truly remarkable.
There have been many studies of this god in recent years; this one is the most comprehensive, fully documented in original sources, textual and artistic, and profusely illustrated. It traces the origin and development of pauranika Ganesa, from pre-pauranika Vinayaka, a vighnakarta, into pauranika Ganesa, a vighnaharta analyses his distinctive features and studies his representation in art both in India and in the other countries of Asia. It seeks to unravel the enigma of a non-Vedic, non-epic and a non-Aryan god coming to occupy a place of honour in Hindu pantheon.
The techniques adopted by the followers of Ganesa to promote his cult and status and the enduring results achieved make a fascinating study in 'PR' work. He is elephant-headed, plump, and loveable, but who is he really? It is taught to lord Shiva by lord Ganesha himself. Then Ganesa appeared before Shiva in his five faced form panchamukha Ganesha and initiated lord Shiva with this hymn.
The sahasranamavali list of names from the sahasranama starting with one and ending with namah salutation is also given for the perpose of chanting. Skip to content. Sri Ganesha Purana. The N rada pur a Book Review:. The text has five literary units, found in all Puranas: khanda , mahatmya , upakhyana , gita and a narrative unit. It is structured as a recitation by sage Vyasa , traceable to sages in the mythical Naimisa forest in Hinduism. The composition style is didactic and mythic, the imagery and framing of story is similar to the other Puranas.
The text has four idiosyncrasies, states Bailey, in that it contains no pancalaksana content, minimal didactic presentation of dharmashastra , the myths are structured as involving Ganesha's intervention in ancient Hindu mythology, and the mythical plots invariably present Ganesha as the life and inner principle of all other Hindu deities.
The Upasanakhanda , or the first part of the Ganesha Purana, presents two modes of worship. One is meditation and mystic contemplation of Ganesha as the eternal Brahman presented in Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy, the metaphysical absolute and Paramatma Nirguna, supreme spirit , where he is same as the Atman soul, innermost self within oneself.
The second approach, suggests the Ganesa Purana, is through preparing an image of god Saguna, murti , decorating it with flowers, presenting it offerings and festively remembering him in Puja-style homage. The Upasanakhanda presents these ideas in a series of episodic stories and cosmogony, that weaves in ancient mythologies as dynamic empirical reality and presents Ganesha as the Vedantist Brahman, or the absolute unchanging reality. Chapters of the Kridakhanda constitute the Ganesha Gita, which is modeled on the Bhagavad Gita, but adapted to place Ganesha in the divine role.
The discourse is given to King Varenya during Ganesha's incarnation as Gajanana. According to Yuvraj Krishan, the Ganesha Gita shows that ninety percent of its stanzas are, with slight modifications, taken from the Bhagavad Gita. Their topics are the same: karma yoga, jnana yoga and bhakti yoga. However, Ganesha replaces Krishna in the divine role, states Yuvraj Krishan. Ganesh puran in marathi pdf. Virat Goyal. Shree Patil.
