If you don't want to spend all your time assigning various download locations to different apps, the best thing to do is get the Google Drive or Dropbox app on your iPad and use these as catch-all spots for your downloads. First, identify the file you wish to download — be it an MP4, a PDF, an image, or some other type of file — and consider where you should store it. Hold your finger down on the file to be downloaded until a pop-up window appears with the file title in gray, above a list of options to take.

Tap the word "Share…". On the next window, tap the icon above the words "Save to Files. From the list that drops down, choose the location that best suits the file or put it into Google Drive or Dropbox and hit the word "Add.

Click "Add" when you have the app you want to save your file to selected. To retrieve the files you downloaded, you'll have to open the app you saved the file to. In the Finder sidebar on your Mac, select your iPad. Connect iPad to your Windows PC. To delete a file from iPad, select the file, press the Delete key, then click Delete. No matter what, files will have to be downloaded to a cloud service. It can be iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, or other similar services.

We are using the Files app because this is a stock application that comes with all iPhones and iPads. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Safari and open the file you are trying to download. In this example, we are trying to download a PDF file. Select Save to Files. From there, you will be able to enable the Files extension.

At this point, you may rename the file and select a specific location before saving it. Personally, I like to save my downloaded files into the Downloads folder, so this is the folder I will select. Now tap the Save button. Remember to check there if you prefer to use a non-Apple-based solution for your file storage. Actively scan device characteristics for identification.
